Here we go. I have an led volt gauge on the WG. The other day I noticed it was showing no charge after I started the bike to leave. Need Ordy to tell me how to say OH FUCK!! in Spanish. Anyway, started testing the components. The integrity of the bat. and ground circuits are good, tested with a load on them, not just a dvm. The stator is putting out 17-18 volts AC per 1000 rpms. Right on specs. It showed 50 VAC at 3000. The diodes in the regulator test good. I'm not relying on the led gauge. I'm using a really good dvm. Checked all the grounds and hot leads. Figured ok,gotta be the regulator cause that's the only thing you can't really test. Got one coming.
In the meantime I charge the battery real good and go for a short ride. Here's where it gets weird. As soon as I'm moving and in gear it starts charging. Pull in the clutch or put it in neutral,it quits charging no matter what speed or rpm. Clutch back out, starts charging again. Doesn't matter if I'm speeding up or slowing down,as long as it's in gear with the clutch engaged it charges. I would think it's something in the alt except the stator was putting out good voltage in the driveway.
Have at it. Thanks
Russ

Even though the diodes checked out on the voltage regulator, that would still be my guess.

Sounds like the regulator to me too. Mine ended up testing weird when I was working on it last summer, it was killing the brand new battery in a matter of a couple days when I kept the battery hooked up. I have a new one here, just haven't been back to put the bike back together...

I gotta agree, it sounds like the regulator. It might be a bad ground where the stator shunts it to the frame. The best way would be to hook it up to a scanalyzer, but from what you described it does sound like a regulator. Better get it solved before it cooks the stator.

LED charging indicator??? Is that one of those Kuratkyn gizmos??? Normally regulators don't do intermittent. I might want to look for a loose wire or bad connection with the LED unit.

Good Luck

Hey all. It's charging just fine going down the road (14.2v) until I pull in the clutch. Then it quits charging. As soon as I let the clutch back out,it starts charging again.
Yes Screwy,it's one of those Kury thingies and it works great but I did all my tests with a dvm. I've checked all connections, grounds fuse box,ran auxiliary grounds. Tomorrow I'm gonna have a look in the primary case. It's charging when there is a load on the primary chain and not charging when there is no load on the chain. Thanks for the input.
I'll let you guys know what I find. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/banghead.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/banghead.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/banghead.gif)

Thinking maybe. Don't know how it would act like that but that's the only area I can think of. Going in there today, let you all know. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh2.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/kopf.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/help.gif)
The other thing throwing me off is the AC charging voltage I got out of the stator. We'll see.

What happens if you kick it into neutral after running 2nd up to say 25?

I've had 2 intermittent charging problems. The first was a bad ground at the regulator and the second was a bad rotor. Stator checked out, had 50 VAC at 3000, but the battery would die once a week.
A couple magnets came loose from the rotor.

Crazy shit happens with the compensator nut , stator and rotor! lots of vibration, heat and spinning. things come loose then out of alignment! cant wait to see what ol'grumpy comes up with!

Big Ty wins the cigar!! The compensator had backed off just enough to let the rotor waller out the splines. Not enough to make any noise. With the bike under a load, the compensator would push on the rotor and clamp it to the spacer and it would then spin. When I checked the stator voltage, there was no electrical load on the rotor so it spun ok and produced AC voltage. With everything connected,it would load the rotor down and it would slip. Thanks all for your help
\Russ

Im telling you the answers are getting less and less when it comes to the charging system..... that fucking NUT....... my body wants to weld the nut to the stator! Russ i got a collection of them things with the reamed out hole now.

Good thing you got it fixed at home they want a shit load of money for that job on the road!

Thanks all for this thread. Reading such excellent descriptions of the symptoms and diagnosis will surely help myself or some friend down the line when this shit inevitably pops up.

Maybe I should open my primary this winter and check it out...maybe throw some more red locktite on it even though I've never had a problem.

Mine had never been apart before. This is factory.

Wow, never thunked of that. I lost the compensator nut on my Springer and Dyna, but when it backed off, it backed off. From no noise at all to a racket that made me sure the whole engine was coming apart. I asked about the Kuriatkyn thingy because I had one on the Springer. The Dyna had an idiot light. Neither showed any problem before the noise started. You are a lucky man Russ, I ate the rotor and stator on both scoots.
