(IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/beerbang1.gif) So I was thinking of using Royal Purple lubes in my 03 88ci. What do u use. Do I use 20w50 in the engine, trans and primary? book says 10w30 10w40 or 20w50 for the primary. This is the newest bike Ive owned i a long time. My last I ran valvoline racing 50W. My last bike is still going strong after 36 years but I plan on putting a shitload of miles on this one. What do ya think? p.s I,ve had a few beers If this post makes no sense then nevermind (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/puke3.gif)

It's good we're both drinking. You'll get a million different opinions on this one.

I use Amsoil in all 3 cause I'm lazy. But, I got about 80,000 on an '01 and it's not hurt at all far as I can tell. Guys will argue. Especially about the tranny cause Amsoil not thick. They're full of shit, of course. (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif) (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/hysterical.gif)

One of the nice things about having three separate fluid resevoirs is you can choose the best oil for each use. Tranny fluid doesn't need the detergents that motor oil does to neutralize the combustion by-products and acids that result...so I like to find a good heavy gear lube like Valvoline 85-140 or Redline Heavy Shockproof 85-250 for the transmission. Likewise, primary chaincase fluid does not need all the expensive additives of motor oil. The primary fluid's purpose is simply to cool and clean the clutch and primary chain...Perfectly suited for ATF...automatic transmission fluid. Another benefit of ATF use is there is zero molybedenum or other friction modifiers added to the fluid which might decrease the hook up power of your clutch pack.

I've been using ATF for past 5 years in primary, a blend of the valvoline and heavy shock proof the last two years in the primary; and Mobil 1 15W-50 automotive motor oil in the crankcase for the past 8 years. Mobil 1 15W-50 is nearly identicle to it's 20-50 motorcycle blend, but with the additional benefit of much higher levels of molybedenum which is a great anti-friction additive...AND IT COSTS MUCH LESS THAN MOTORCYCLE SPECIFIC OILS. With air-cooled motors, I am a big proponent of synthetics for the crankcase as they have a much higher flash point and will protect far longer when you're caught in heavy summer traffic.

I'm with SEAHAG on the uses. I use Mobile1 15W50 (way cheaper $$$), I use Redline ShockProof Heavy in the tranny, and in the primary I use just a basic primary oil, and I've also used plain ole 10W40 motor oil. (That's basically what it is.)

As for Royal Purple,....I'll never use it because of the 2 test study results I've seen on it. That Royal Purple stuff had a horrible wear result and all the properties after use were bad.

(I decided to look for one while typing this and here's the first that I found)

H-D or RevTech 20W-50 dino has worked great for me over the years......75-80 gear oil in the tranny and a qt of 10W40 for the primary. I've never went the syn oil route.

Synthetic works fine, but tends to be a bit noisier. I guess dead dinosaurs are better at dampening sound.

Ironhead75, why do you feel compelled to shit in your back yard? You asked for advice and it was given. Who are you to tell anyone to stick with the subject matter? Would you walk into a friend's house and tell him to shut up while he's talking to his brother? Why do it here? HST is a family. If you didn't know that, it's your loss.

Stick around. You might learn something.

LOL. Good one. This is the first time I've clicked on this thread, and haven't yet read beyond your post. It ain't died yet, so, it's probably a good one. I might as well check it out.

edit: oh yeah, and I also use HD or RevTech 20W50, but I do use synthetic in the dresser. I don't know why. It's the first time I've ever used synthetic. Maybe I was just curious.

I prefer Cannola in the tank and Virgin Olive in the tranny. That way I don't worry about it's cholesterol. (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/hysterical.gif)

P.S. We need a sticky explaining the search funtion. (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif)

I recycle the old oil from my Jeep for the motor and when I unpack the differentials I use it in the tranny.

Is that BAD??

H-D or RevTech 20W-50 dino has worked great for me over the years......75-80 gear oil in the tranny and a qt of 10W40 for the primary. I've never went the syn oil route.

Do not listen to this gibberish!! He's only got like 75 miles on his bike!!! (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif)
