Thinking about putting in a system for the basement/outside. 2 phase 6 hp 40-60 gallon tank system. I know noise is the "nature of the beast" of compressor's but is there any brand that's a little better? Cabin fever is running as I just finished restoring a nice Rock Island 571 vise obtained from the Front Royal Va Avtex Superfund site some years ago. Needed one on the workbench anyway.

Depends on what you want to spend.

Quality is always worth the price but it's the noise factor I'm thinking about being in the basement. Clean up chain saw's a lot.

Can't help much with the compressor.

I've got an ancient vice. Mounts on a bench, has a "leg" to the floor. Yer puttin'g me to shame. But, giving me some incentive to make that thing look one tenth as good as yours.

NICE JOB!!!

Piston compressors are considerably quieter than diaphragm pumps. Unfortunately they need more HP to power them. Most hardware store compressors are diaphragm.

Good Luck

Whatever you get just put a stock Harley muffler on it, it'll be quiet. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/banghead.gif)

Finally remembered the brand we used at work. Quincy. Relatively quiet and ran for a couple decades.

I have a Craftsman 30 gallon. Little motor on top. I've had it for just about exactly 20 years. It's still tickin' Noisiest sumbitch going!!!

nothing wrong with the harbor freight piston compressors and fittings....I just would not buy their hoses...they have lots of sales and coupons....there is a store by me

put it outside and cover it when you don't use it

I own a Porter-Cable 5 gal. compressor i don't know if it's any better or worse then any of the others. But it is fairly quiet as compressors go.

Tnx for the info folk's! Been putting up with a itty bitty "el cheapo" portable and need a decent in-house system with a line outside for the dirty work. Run 2 saw's from time to time and they can get clogged up with pretty good with the bar-oil/saw-dust mixture. Itty bitty doesn't have enough ass.
