I bought a detachable passenger backrest. I have the detachable hardware (4 point) on the bike. Soooo, the front of the backrest needs to mount where the shocks are. Is this correct? Do I need to install the docking collars on a longer bolt between the shock and the frame? I have looked online and called a couple of dealers. Not to my surprise they did not have an answer. It goes on my 09 electra glide.

Anyone have the answer?

tom,

all I remember is that 4 point dock was the most fucked up install ever....I can't find my instruction sheet if I ever had one....seems like I went down to the dealer and looked at one installed

the narrow spool goes just behind the shock on the shorter screw (the longer screw is for the wider spool to the rear of bike)

so behind the shock you assemble on the shorter screw in this order = chrome washer, spool, one end of that black bar....then that assembly screws into the frame strut behind the shock.....

then the big black bracket bolts on using two cap screws at the rear of the frame strut -- the black bar mounts to this bracket on the "inside" of the bracket using the top front hole (there are 4 holes)

the longer screw is assembled in this order = chrome washer(s), wide spool, washer(s).....then the screw assembly goes through big black bracket, then through the black bar (behind the bracket), and then the self-locking nut

adjust the number of washers to get the alignment you need

probably ought to drape the fender, etc to protect from the tools when you get really pissed off....

Thanks Lou. I have the 4 point docking installed but the front of the backrest will install somewhere around the rear shock. Don't know what I need to get the front mounted. Fucking HD, no damn info (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/angry.gif)

the front of the backrest has a semicircular notch that slips into the narrow spool

Problem is that the rear of the bracket of the backrest fits into the forward set of spools on the 4 point docking hardware (closest to the front of the bike). There are no spools near the rear shock where the front of the bracket of the backrest would mount.

I've got that set up on my lowrider Oak. Would it help if I snapped a few pics? I had the dealer install mine along with my pipes but it seems pretty straight forward.

Bike is at my girl friends place. Won't get up there till this weekend. Zip, don't think the lowrider will be similar to my issue since it is a touring bike. This whole thing sucks that you can't even get good info from the dealer. I will most likely ride it to their service department to see if someone has a clue.

then they're missing
sure you have an 09-up backrest?

Sounds like the backrest isn't the problem. It sounds like he doesn't have the detachable docking kit for that backrest installed. Maybe the docking kit for a luggage rack is installed, but not for the backrest?
