No speedo jokes, I'd scare old ladies

My 1988 Springer manual says to remove trip meter knob and choke nut and pull console straight up. No friggn way this is moving...
Am I missing something?
I have a spare speedometer that came with the bike and looks like two bolts hold it on from the underneath.
Want to remove choke cable , have a screaming eagle carb with knob out the left under tank
Any help would be helpful..
