I am starting the planning of a 2015 trip to Alaska ... (upper management has already given approval ... she will fly in to Anchorage for the three days)

I am looking at a pretty easy travel schedle with just one big (700 miles) mileage day each way (* due to lack of towns *)
And 3 full days in/around in Anchorage.

1
Alexandria, MN5702Weyburn, SK, Canada5453Edmonton, AB, Canada5564Buckinghorse River Lodge, Peace River B, BC, Canada5355Whitehorse, YT, Canada7006Tok, AK3907Anchorage, AK3208Anchorage, AK759Anchorage, AK7510Anchorage, AK7511Tok, AK32012Whitehorse, YT, Canada39013Buckinghorse River Lodge, Peace River B, BC, Canada70014Edmonton, AB, Canada53515Weyburn, SK, Canada55616Alexandria, MN54517Hopewell, IL570Totals7,457
Obviously many things still to be planned. (Only one spreadsheet created so far)

Rough initial estimates are 7,500 miles and about $2,750 (plus an oil change in Anchorage).
(* And probably a set of tires by the time I get back home ... rumor has it the the highways up there eat up tires ... I will plan on a new set a couple of weeks before leaving *)

Not alot of towns / options ... and I still need to verify gas stations to see if we would need to carry fuel. Probably one night of camping each way ... maybe more dependant on input of others ...

Revisions over the next 18 months ... this seems like a trip that takes at least a year to plan out well ... so, who has interest and who is willing to commit??

I have spent quite a bit of time in Alaska and it is a amazing place but I personally would not bring my Harley there, The roads have so much loose gravel on them from the change of seasons that it would not be fun for me.

Good luck and do your home work before you go...there is a lot of good and some bad

80 minutes. Told it's worth it. I've not seen it. Dude documents an Alaskan trip.
Lots to read too.

Edit: Should give credit. I pulled it from cvoharley. I think someone there pulled it from roadglide.org

Some of you may remember that in 06 my son and I drove from Anchorage back to Florida (5000 miles) pulling his camper and his Fatboy in the back of the truck. There is miles and miles of gravel roads (Dolomite) In Alaska and although we did see a few bikes traveling on these roads I'm not sure I'd ride mine. I'm guessing probably a hundred miles on one stretch. Beautiful country side but gravel and Electra Glides don't match for me.

hmmm ... so, from initial readings I need to lower miles to 300-400 a day ...

so roughly 30 days in order to experience many things ... (and nothing elk related)

anyone else still have interest??

I do. Depends on date.

Due to time involved, I might ride up and ship my bike back. Not for sure, but may look into that.

Not big on camping on the way there, though. Bugs are a bitch!

Although you will not need to start and end out at my house ...

Probably meet in Alexandria, MN.

I lowered daily miles to offset for weather and road conditions and for stopping for pics and animals.

I will put this on hold for further research until summer 2014 for additional planning.

My bro Gary is a maybe ... I am 60/40 on doing it myself if needed. My concern would be picking up bike if dumps on gravel ...

ALL invited ...

Glad Gary might go!

Ty says Deet gives you cancer.

Would probably meet you in Fargo instead of Alexandria.

Though from KC, would rather route up through WY, MT and through Calgary to Edmonton instead of through SD, ND and Saskatchewan. A lot more scenic. Might have to meet you in Edmonton but hell, this is a long way off!

If I drop my bike I am not going to pick it up. Just light it on fire and ride bitch with you now that you have a nice comfy passenger seat and backrest. (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/schreck.gif) Can just buy a new bike in Alaska.

Anyway, There's still plenty of time.... We may win the Lotto... Who knows... :-)

Either way I'm sure it'll be a great experience...

So does toothpaste, almond milk, fish, french fries, etc etc etc

Of course, mosquitoes give you malaria, encephalitis, West Nile, etc. Just not in Alaska.

You probably don't need to worry about bugs camping on the Alcan Highway think more about the bears coming inside your tent. Not many motels on that highway either, and bringing guns across the border might be something else to consider. There needs to be some serious planning for this trip. This trip would be a 10,000 mile round trip for me.

We just did Cal, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, then headed back south this year. Vesta wants to head farther north into Washington, maybe Canada next year. Maybe I can talk her into a sout-west ride next year and Alaska in 15. Too soon to tell.
