I like.....appears ~100 miles north of Duluth.

That must put it pretty close to the Arctic Circle, then . . .

Good shopping Sara! I like both properties! With the second, love the charm of an older cottage, and so awesome to be right on the lake!!! At least it's south of Lutsen - such an incredible area, it would be great to revisit again.

I'd vote for the other choice, this one looks pretty "lived in". Plus, it didn't appear to have much of a garage or covered parking for the scoots. The views on the other hand look to be spectacular. Just my .02😇

I didn't see an address on the site but if you have it you could go on Google Maps/Satellite and view the land for bike parking.
The place we staying Missouri I asked the owners about bike access/parking/turnaround due to the extreme hilliness of the area. Then I went on Google Maps/Satellite to check.

not to change the destination or anything, but I was really surprised at all the scenic roads that Minnesota has to offer!

Check this out!

One of the routes, "Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway" has Clay's Mankato smack dab in the middle.

It's SO time we wind our way over for a visit Clay!

....just for laughs I searched for accommodations for 20 near there. This is what I found and it's open for our time period.

The day ride for the early crowd will include a good stretch of that scenic river byway. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bike.gif)

Thought I'd put an update in here. Sara checked back in with the people who had the house we were leaning towards. We wanted to get up north and do a bit of scouting before we committed to that one place and there was some question as to whether there was enough room for all the couples we hope will be attending; but we took too long and that place is now booked up for the time of our rally.

Sara wanted to find some place epically beautiful; but we may have the best luck trying to get a block of motel rooms. The weekend of October 3rd is when we have plans to run up north and scout some areas out. Since it's basically 5 hours north from where we live, it's not a trip we make often; but it's always worth the drive.

Clay, what about the second place that was near Lutsen? Is that one rented too? I like the house idea, and the view is to die for!

So if I have this right, Sara confirmed this one further up the north shore in Lutsen is still available for our dates of July 28-31.

http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p145553vb#calendar

It says it can sleep 21. If we have more people than that show up, we can take a page from the HST central playbook and start inflating air mattresses. I'm just tired of the lodging hunt and want to lock into something. Our tour up north didn't make it as far as Lutsen to check out the property first hand yet. Some of our friends talked last weekend about going up with the trucks in the winter to do more scouting of the area. We did however hook up with some HOG members at the Duluth Harley Davidson dealer and got some great leads on the best roads in the area complete with maps of riding the arrowhead. They even offered to lead us on some group rides if I contact them ahead of time.

So let's talk about financing this space... I've got credit card space; but I'm concerned they may run the charge immediately and hence I'll be paying inflated monthly installments for several months before seeing any of you peeps. Next year is already going to be a stretch with Sara's oldest graduating high school and the subsequent party and gifts. Plus she wants to take a real trip this winter with the boys instead of trading Xmas presents as this may be the last chance to do so before they are 'adults'.

The reviews on this place are stellar and I expect we'll be quite happy with our base camp:

"We have been returning to Cedarcliff for ten years and have found it to be a beautiful, peaceful oasis. The building sits right on the lake (Superior) and it so relaxing to sit on the long window benches and watch the water flow over the rocks. The property has beautiful trees and sitting areas so one can feel at peace. We have always enjoyed the snowy winters and skied cross country on the trails, but we have also hiked. We want to return in the fall and see the colors-it must be incredible! The beds are so comfortable that everyone always sleeps late. The pillows and comforters are down in nicely decorated rooms. We especially enjoy the dining room table where all 12 of us can share a meal together. The fireplace warms the living room where we love to gather to share our day's adventures. This truly is our home away from home."

Sandra's oldest daughter Kim has offered to put her culinary training to use providing food for our group. Hopefully everything works out for her and her Mom to attend...and hopefully we have a couple solo riders with whom they can ride along. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bike.gif) We'll enlist our boys to shuttle gear up north in the truck and head out early Thursday as it will be an all day ride to get to Lutsen. It says 5 hours and 15 minutes by car...with bike refueling, sore ass breaks and food/drink, we'll take more like 8-9 hours I expect. I have a nice scenic route to get us over to the interstate 35; but after that it will be mostly super slab on Thursday trying to keep the group together.

Let me know what you need to help, Clay.

I'll probably be solo as usual, so Kim or Sondra (or both (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif) ) can ride with me if needed.

We'll be close enough to take the drive for sure; but to actually cross the border you need a passport. I still do not have one, so I'll have to stay on this side; but I would like to see it.

Ok so we need 50% down at time of reservation with balance due two weeks prior to date. We'll get this secured and when I get your funds, I'll apply it to the credit card balance right away.

If we have 20 people, Sara has calculated it will be $102.70 per person for the lodging Thursday to Sunday.

Yeah, we'll have to get our passports too.... That's why I was asking.... It takes about 6-8 weeks to get it so we'll have plenty of time....

Email or Text me to let me know how you want the funds sent....

Ok...WE'VE GOT OUR RESERVATION! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sorcerer.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bike.gif)

So in whatever denominations you want to send, we've got $1141.13 to cover for the down payment. We'll keep track and shuffle the money around at the rally if any have overpaid. Obviously, the more people [within reason] that attend, the lower each individuals piece of the whole will be.

You can send checks to

Well as I had yet to get a passport, and don't know if I wanted to fuck with that anyway, I was originally thinking a run down the 'coast' to Gooseberry Falls state park. Incredible beauty...7 sets of falls I believe.

Will have a check in the mail in a week or two. Also my friend Jim Miller/Livingston Montana will be attending and be sending you a check shortly too.

Had noticed the Gooseberry Falls Park and was going to do a drive by on the way in.

Just had the clutch hub bearing replaced and all the drive line noise went away. Hasn't been this quiet in over 10 years!

Been to Gooseberry falls several times. It's a neat stop. While you can get into Canada with a DWI conviction, you need to apply well in advance or pay a $170 fee at the border. Dot and my passports expire this year and did not want to renew them for the $300 as of yet. There's a Ski Hill in Ludsen that has a Mountain(actually a big hill) Tram ride and an alpine slide that operates in the summer. We did that last time we were there and it's a hoot.

That sounds cool too, Buck

I pretty much gave up on the idea of crossing over because of the hassle over something that happened over 25 yrs ago.... Geez.... Fuck That... I just wanted a t-shirt... lol

btw, I'm happy to see the turn out...

It looks like we have the makings of yet another HST Rally full of Great Memories....

We expect to have a handful of new faces for you all to meet as well. Some of our local riding friends who've heard HST stories for years, and both of Sara's boys will be helping out in some capacity as well. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bike.gif)

As sweet as our location is right on the lake, I expect we'll keep the daily rides kinda short so we can spend more time socializing around the base camp. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerbang1.gif)
