I'm looking for advice as to what could be causing rough running intake back firing. I have a 05 ultra with se 95 kit 65000 miles. On a ride up the coast bike running smooth and slowly started decel pop and proceeded to get worse, poor idle pop and stall rough idle. Not bad fuel I drained and replaced , not plugs or wires I replaced not TCS I replaced , not a exhaust leak pulled exhaust cleaned and die penned new gaskets and clamps all torqued to specs. I can not figure out what would cause it to continue running poor . Cam tensioner was replaced at 25000 . Could it possibly be CPS ? I did not throw a code on the speedo check. Any ideas ?

Crack in the Y-Pipe maybe? Will act jut like an exhaust leak.

I'd look for an intake leak....

with engine idling you can spary some carb cleaner around the intake manifold to see if it smooths out....or if you have a propane torch attach a rubber hose to it and let some propane around the intake seals to look for an increase in idle speed

Thanks for replies , I've done so much trouble shooting I left out the fact I have checked for intake leaks as suggested and found no change in idle, y pipe is solid I removed complete exhaust system and checked for cracks .

Does the bike have a screaming eagle race tuner? It's rare, but on occasion they have been known to 'lose' their program. It's never happened to me, but it did happen several times to a friend's 03 RoadGlide. If it reverted back to the stock 88" map, it would be running very lean. Otherwise, my first inkling was also an intake manifold leak. I have made a habit of using RTV Copper high temp silicone on the intake manifold seals when reassembling. The adhesive helps hold the gaskets in place while fitting it into position and once cured has proven to me so far to prevent any intake leaking.

Thanks SeaHag, yes it does have se tuner but it's,running super rich. I have sprayed the intake a couple of times but no change in rpm. I'm thinking I will just take it to my Indy tomorrow . I'm stumped and do not want to keep throwing money at it.

I thought I would do a follow up post after finding the problem. After several weeks of pulling what little hair I have left out . I took the bike to the stealership and they found a bad fuel pressure check valve , 3 hrs later and $400 I'm up and running again. My syptoms were cruising down the road and all the sudden I'm getting severe intake backfire exhaust backfire . All said and done I did think the pump was rather raspy sounding . Hope this helps someone out in the future. I swore and my Indy swore intake leak ! All and all sometimes it is worth getting bent over by the dealer.
