I have a 2001 FXDL and the ignition was left in the acc position and the battery died, i was going to take it to school 1 morning and it wouldnt start so i tried to roll start it and that didnt work cuz i couldnt get it moving fast enough by myself in 2nd gear even with the clutch pulled all the way in. i was told that I could jump start it off of my car so I did and it started fine and stayed running, i shut it off after about 15 min and then it wouldnt start, lights were dim and no starter click. I jump started it again and let it run for about 45 min in the hope that the battery would charge and it shut off, again the lights were dim and the starter made a kind of clunking noise. Today i bought a brand new battery, put it in, lights are bright, now the starter just clicks. did I fry my starter by jump starting it? i dont really have the know how or time to replace the starter myself so im thinking that I am going to have to call the stealership to come pick it up and get it fixed.

any help is appreciated, call me an idiot if i screwed it up...only 1 way to learn i guess

If it turns over and starts when you jump it then it isn't the starter. Probably the starter relay got fried.

I thought you were trying to diagnose a starter issue. At this point does it matter? The vehicle you jump from doesn't need to be running. I've jumped my bike several times with no problem.
