a buddy of mine i've known for a long, long time rides bmw tourers (he and i have ridden up to laconia a couple of times together). yes, those bmw'r guys are a little quirky, but then again i'm sure they can say the same about us harley guys.

anyways.

he came down last week for some riding, and we started talking about long rides and prepping for long rides. eventually the topic of riding "apparel" came up. so he says to me that he wears a special kind of underwear to keep his ass in check on long rides.

knowing that a long time on the bike can create special "needs" regardless of the seat you've chosen, i decided to try out his tip - and went to the local sporting goods store to buy a pair of bicycle riding underwear/shorts. they're made of spandex and some other shit, with a special pad (looks life yer wife's monthly flow pad) sewn in the crotch/ass area. they're basically compression shorts, and are made to help out long distance cyclers. they're not cheap (in my area the store brand was $20 - cannondale brand was $60 ... i bought the store brand), but -

they definitely work. i put 500 on the bike in less than 10 hours and never looked back. no chafing, no underwear riding up my crotch, no folds (where the underwear doubles up/creases) to bug me, no issues whatsoever.

i am a convert, and would highly suggest them to anyone having fanny fatigue issues or that begin to experience some discomfort on long rides. tip: buy 1-2 sizes smaller - you want them to fit very snuggly.

The Ironbutt website helpful hints page recommends using them since they don't have seams which will irritate you.

lifted from the "wheel & sprocket" - wisconsin's largest bicycle store:

(IMG:http://wheelandsprocket.com/images/library/site/bikeshortwoman.jpg)

Final Tips
Never wear underwear under your bike shorts! The materials used in pads today are designed to wick moisture, breathe and prevent bacteria growth. As such, bike shorts are much more sanitary than your underwear.

Additionally, the whole purpose of the short's pad is to prevent chafing. In order to work, the short must fit your body like a second skin. Having a layer of clothing between your body and your bike short will prevent the short from working the way that it should, and will increase your chances of experiencing chafing and sores where the underwear sits against your body.

What's more, if you ride regularly, you'll probably find that it's best to have at least two pairs of riding shorts because it'll ensure that you always have a clean pair to ride in.

(hey tomah riders - try 'em out. it'll beat this alternative: hst monkey butt topic)

So they can handle the pee dribbles and farts? What about the old guys (like Huey) that have excessive leakage? Do these work with Depends? (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/hysterical.gif)

I have some compression shorts I use when playing racquetball. They don't have the maxi-pad, but they should work . . . .

But upon reflection . . . . I think I'll pass! Good idea for the cheek-challenged, though.
