The THINNEST liner DOT half-helmet still looks like half a basketball on my head - the NeXL helmets:

I went to a Carbon Fiber (Head Trip) helmet (non-DOT) and it's awesome - provides some good protection as well.

The Head Trip non-DOT half-helmets are all I will buy from now on. (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/beerbang1.gif)

Here is the review I was going to post [but the forum was down] of the HCI 100 series DOT helmet I just bought.

Well, I've had a chance to ride with the new helmet. It certainly took care of my two major complaints about helmets. I have no interference with my hearing or peripheral vision. While the weight of the helmet is light, it does take some getting used to when you're not used to wearing anything more substantial than a ball cap or stocking hat. Having said that, it has not exibited any buffeting, or pulling back on the chin strap....but I do have exceptional wind protection behind the fairing with the Cee Bailey's windshield. However, my full face does get a bit of buffeting, even with the windshield...so again, its another improvement.

As far as looks go, it appears better in photos, than I would have thought. By feel alone, it seems to sit high off the head, but I'm pleasantly surprised that it doesn't give the huge mushroom head look.

Overall, I think the helmet is a good deal for those of us not inclined to spend a lot of money on something we don't really enjoy wearing. Though I bought this through Jafrum, it is an HCI 100 series helmet...which I've seen reviewed favorably before. Cost was $33.00 shipped to my door

If you click on this link, it shows you the face shields that are made to work in conjunction with the visor...whether or not another companies fuller faceshield would work, I don't know. These look as if they'd give you the fighter pilot kinda look.

i haven't gotten any of a lotta things for a while! (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

thanks for the quick response ... how 'bout sizing? was it accurate as it related to what you ordered? i've always been afraid of ordering wearable items without first having the opportunity to try them on - sometimes i can be an odd fit.

went to carlisle bike week a month or so ago and tried unsuccessfully to get a dot beanie then - according to the various helmet vendors there, my head ran from a small to a large - sometimes within the same tent and same model. in short, none of 'em fit.

........now you know why male cats kill the little ones to bring the female back into heat. Fortunately for us humans, woman are usually just as anxious for the six week waiting period to be over as us men. Just a word of caution tho.......breast milk can lead to impotence when consumed by adult males. (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/yes.gif)

The sizing was right on for me. I wear a size large according to their measurements at 23 1/8" ...which is right at the top end of the large range. They tell you to order the smaller size if you are borderline...and appropriately, it fits snuggly but not overtight. They do include a small extra ammount of padding if you should need to take up some slack somewhere...but I didn't need it. My head is oblong in shape, with more length front to back than side to side, and it seems to fit great. So if you are more of a 'roundy' it might not feel as comfortable for you.

I am very satisfied that I added a small level of protection without gaining an eyesore; and at a very reasonable price.

Advanced Carbon composites The lightest smallest DOT helmet I have ever had. Their higher than giraffe pussy $165.00 for the DOT but worth it to me. Not much larger than a skid lid. Here is a link to their web site. http://www.carbonfiberhelmets.com/
