For you full face helmet riders...

I am getting a new full face for cold weather riding this spring and am looking at the Nolan N102 http://www.nolanhelmets.com/n102.htm

Question 1, how risky is buying online with regard to fit? I do match Nolan's size chart, but not sure their sizes run true... and So far I haven't found a local dealer who sells them so I can try one on.

Question 2, has anyone ready any reviews on this helmet?

Question 3, Does anyone recommend other full face helmets that I should consider?

Question 4, Where have you had good E-purchase experiences with helmets.

Thanks in advance for your input and suggestions!

I don't think I would buy one on the internet if I hadn't tried it on somewhere. The circumference of your head may match the Nolan charts, but I find that the shape of the various brands is different. My head is too wide for some brands which makes for a very uncomfortable fit.

I have an HJC full face that I like, but it tends to put a fair amount of pressure on my cheeks. It gets pretty uncomfortable on long rides.

I also have a Nolan N42 which I like better than the full face as far as comfort. It doesn't offer the protection of a full face, but the full shield does block the wind, and the area of vision is much greater than a full face. I think I bought it from Dennis Kirk. They have free shipping over $100, and they have a good return policy.

I also have two 1/2 helmets. My favorite is the cheapie that I bought from Jafrum.

I only wear my full face in the cold winter months (Dec./Jan) and that is when it hovers around 35-40 degrees, the rest of the time I go half helmet with a neck gator if it's in between temps.

I bought my used (barely) HJC off e-bay for $10. I won a large, but it was a little snug, so what I did was stuff an old throw pillow and two paperback books near the ears in there to loosen up the liner, making a more comfortable fit. I guess my point is if you don't plan on wearing the full face the majority of the time you may want to search e-bay or if you buy too small stuff an old throw pillow and a couple of books.

Good luck.

You might want to go to a couple of Jap dealers to see if they have any Nolan's in stock and try on for fit before you order on line.

I have a Nolan full face/flip-up can't remember the #. I love it. It's very comfortable, fairly quiet and great in cold weather. But try one first to make sure it works for you. I use mine for long distance hwy riding for wind protection and safety also.

I've always managed to find one to try on before I bought over the web. I bought a 3/4 from thehelmetshop.com, and had no problems. I don't know if they handle Nolan, though.

I bought a Shoei X-Eleven. It was expensive, but after trying on half a dozen other helmets I felt it was the quietest and fit the best. I wanted a full face flip-up but could not find one that was both DOT and Snell approved. I’m a new rider and felt I should spend the extra money for the best protection I could get. I got the Shoei at Cycle Gear and the store manager gave me 10% off. That made it a better price than I could find anywhere on the net.

I'd check the phone book for a big dealer of just about any brand of bike and call them. Where I live, the Honda dealer and the Yamaha/Suzuki dealer both carry Nolan. There is also a small Indy that carries Nolan.

Max,

just curious about the fitment of your Nolan Helmet. I tried on a size large today and wore it around the store for about 15 minutes to try to get the feel of it. After a few minutes it started to bother my forehead a little. It didn't hurt, I could just feel something there that made me question the fit. I also haven't had a helmet on in a few months so it could have been just the shock of wearing one...

Anyways Nolan lists a size large as 50/60 Centimeters. I measure 23 3/4 inches which = 60.3 centimeters. I think going to an XL (an extra 1/4") will be too big....

So, question for yah? Do you think the foam padding will break in a bit if I work if with my fingers... or tap it with a rubber hammer?

What's your experience with break-in on the padding? Have you seen any change since you bought it?

Thanks in for you input...

I once bought a 3/4 HD helmet (felt pretty good in the store) that gave me a pounding fucking headache after about an hour of wear. I'd say if it felt tight don't buy it, 'cause there's nothing worse that a headache helmet on a long ride.

If they allow returns you could always wear it around the house for a couple of hours and see if it works. Just don't count on it feeling better over time. BTW, that's the same advice I give my customers re: our shoes.

Good luck!

on a full face you want it tight or it will move all over. It should not move when you shake your head. You dont want it to give you a headache bro, but it should be snug on your head and cheeks. Besides they always loosen up after wearin' em for a while.

My HJC fits my head, but squeezes my cheeks too much. It gets very uncomfortable after 30 minutes, or so. Maybe there is some way to compress the padding?

Besides they always loosen up after wearin' em for a while.

That's what I was thinking Buck?

I wore it for about 20 minutes... even walked around outside to test the shield and Sun visor... I didn't get a headache... Just questioned the snug fit...

Did you try the extra large? That's what I wear, and the HJC is still snug in the cheek area.

It almost sounds like it's a bit uncomfortable given your concerns. It might break in, but it probably depends on the materials that it's made of. It might be uncomfortable for the first 20 minutes, but unbearable after 45 minutes. I'd try an XL on for size.

BD, that's my dillema, there is only one place close by me and they only had 1 size L helmet for me tor try... No XL's in stock. The cheek area left me plenty of room to put my fingers in comfortably, no squeezing in the face at all, I could put sun glasses on/off very easily...

I think I'll search some more and try to find an XL... just to try it on before I commit...

If I can't find this Helmet... I dam sure want one just like it that fits... (IMG:http://www.harleyshoptalk.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/yes.gif)

If your new helmet is too small, I know this little guy with a bone in his nose that can shrink your head a bit. :mage:
