Palin Crossed Border For Canadian Health Care.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20100308/cm_huffpost/490080 Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin -- who has gone to great lengths to hype the supposed dangers of a big government takeover of American health care -- admitted over the weekend that she used to get her treatment in Canada's single-payer system. "We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada," Palin said in her first Canadian appearance since stepping down as governor of Alaska. "And I think now, isn't that ironic?" The irony, one guesses, is that Palin now views Canada's health care system as revolting: with its government-run administration and 'death-panel'-like rationing. Clearly, however, she and her family once found it more alluring than, at the very least, the coverage available in rural Alaska. Up to the age of six, Palin lived in a remote town near the closest Canadian city, Whitehorse. Officials at several hospitals in that area declined to give out information on patient visits. |

Sorry, I don't really see the big deal. Sarah Palin is against government run health care. Her parents may not have been.
http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/03/09-5 “My first five years of life we spent in Skagway, Alaska, right there by Whitehorse,” Palin said during a speech in Calgary on Saturday." |

And, another thing. "In 1984 Parliament passed the Canada Health Act, which affirmed the federal government's commitment to provide mostly free health care to all, including the 200,000 immigrants arriving each year. The system is called Medicare (no relation to Medicare in the United States)." So, it wasn't even national health care there back in the '60's. This is a good article I came upon about how well the Canadian system works. Actually, they don't consider it national health care.

FWIW, in Quebec at least, the Canadian HC system sucks. Long waits for any specialized care or cancer treatment. Most Canadians who can afford it buy supplemental policies to avoid the system. Since we were American and paid cash to be reimbursed by our American Ins. co. , we went to the front of the line in Canadian clinics. Not that we really wanted to, just that the dr. was so glad to collect a few bucks cash. Sad to see old retired Quebecois patiently waiting and being told they could get their prostate radiation treatments in about six months IF they didnt die meanwhile.
Be careful wishing for a Canadian or British like system. You will pay more for less and the poor will still be ignored or have to wait too long for too little. It IS what happens in Canada and Britain NOW. |

I'll add my comment,
Yes insurance is expensive and health care costs are high, but -government regulates rates to a degree -government stipulates that anyone has to be treated in certain instances, independent of their ability to pay -government health care (medicaid / medicare) is fleeced by fraud and abused (visit a nursing home and you'll see people at the end of life way over medicated / receiving PT when they haven't walked in years or will never walk again, be it will be payed for) -government says its illegal to buy American developed & manufactured drugs outside the US for a fraction of the costs -its goes on and on. I got alot of health care this year. Based on what care I recieve and what the doctors, surgery centers, etc. received for payment, it seemed costs were reasonable. The insurance company (or Medicare for some people) didn't pay the inflated doc bills, but its like buying a car. The prices are inflated knowing the final price will be lower. So I don't want Goverment anymore involved in my life. Obama's comment will bashing the Insurance companies. "The insurance industry is rationing care based on whether the people can pay" Isn't that amazing, an American private company giving services only to customers that pay for their product, unfucking believable. I can't wait for the Federal goverment to come along and tell me to work for any General Contractor or Owner even if they can't pay. |
